National Highways announced that essential repair work is to
take place on the bridge that carries the M6 over the River Lowther, situated
just south of junction 40.
The essential repair work will start on Monday 15 May 2023
and expect this work to take five months to complete.
National Highways have said “The bridge structure is now
over 50 years old and requires substantial repairs to ensure the longevity of
the structure for many years to come.”
“Our work involves replacing the bridge’s expansion joints,
waterproofing the bridge decks and improving drainage. We will also resurface
the road and replace road markings on the bridge decks, further prolonging the
life of the structure.”
To safely carry out these repairs National Highways will use
a contraflow system on a one-mile section of the M6 between junctions 39 and
40. In total, 2.5-miles of the M6 will be operating with two lanes of traffic
in both directions while this essential repair work takes place from mid-May to
the end of October 2023.
A reduced speed limit of 40mph will be in effect on the
2.5-mile section of the M6 and free vehicle recovery will be in operation on
both carriageways. There will also be signed restrictions for abnormal loads.
National Highways will also enact several overnight closures
of the M6 from junction 39 to junction 40 between May and October 2023.
National Highways will have a signed diversion route along the A6 while overnight closures are in effect. The overnight closures dates will be announced closer to the closure dates.
