Westmorland and Furness Councillors will Next Week Vote To Increase Their Own Allowances

Westmorland and Furness Councillors will meet next Thursday (11th July) for the councils first full council meeting since the 9th of May to discuss just three items, The increase in the councillor’s own allowance, The councils request to the Local Government Boundary Commission to keep the number of councillors the same and update on the Cumbria Pension Fund.

Councillors will vote on a recommendation to increase their own allowance backdated to the 1st of April to £13,500 a year with special allowances paid to chairs of committees and the Cabinet and leadership having been increased in a previous meeting of the council. With members of the councils Cabinet already receiving £26,000 and the councils Deputy leader receiving £28,600 and the Leader of the Council receiving £39,000 per year plus expenses. If the council votes to increase their general allowance the cabinet members and leadership will also see their general members allowance increase.

In February some members of the council requested that a recommendation to increase the councillor’s allowance be reviewed with a view to increasing the amount paid to councillors of Westmorland and Furness Council not just the amounts to the cabinet and leadership.

It’s understood that not all members of the council support the plans to increase the allowances and could again see a heated debate on the subject in the council chamber next Thursday in Kendal.
