Westmorland and Furness Council's Covert 2.5MW Solar Farm Plans Revealed for Edge of Penrith and Lake District National Park

Plans have been uncovered that show Westmorland and Furness councils are planning the development of a 2-2.5MW Solar farm and associated infrastructure on farm land at Redhills, Penrith is the latest in a number of local applications for large solar arrays around Penrith.

A planning request for the screening opinion for the solar farm development has been submitted to the planning department of Westmorland and Furness Council by an Edinburgh based company acting ono behalf of the council.

The application is for a council owned land located at Redhills, Penrith that is currently used as grazing land. 

The former Eden District Council who owned the land until April and is now owned by Westmorland and Furness Council, had previously tried to sell and rent the land for options including a hotel unsuccessfully over the last few years although no formal planning Applications were ever submitted for the site that once formed part of a Penrith landfill site that includes part of the land the A66 now stands on along with the land Slapstones roundabout (Rheged).

The agriculture land is visible from vantage points around Penrith including Penrith Beacon and across a large area south of the site including from the village’s of Sockbridge, Tirril, Yanwath, Askham, Clifton as well as many local fells located in the Lake District National Park whos located to the southwest of the councils solar farm site.

The A66 borders the land directly to the north and Rheged is located along the western boundary with the Village of Stainton beyond.

In September Westmorland and Furness Council cabinet approved funding and construct another 2MW Solar Farm at Sandscale Park, Barrow in Furness at an estimated cost of £2.781million to the council, the council has yet to approve any budget for its latest solar farm plans for Penrith.
