The Easter get away is leading to lengthy delays around Junction 40 with traffic currently queuing beyond J41 along the M6 Southbound carriageways.
Traffic is also queuing along the A66 in both directions on approach to junction 40.
Traffic through Penrith is currently heavy but moving despite the gridlock on the M6 and A66 with delays on upto 50 minutes on the M6 and 30 minutes for drivers on the A66 approaching J40.
The RAC forecast around 2.7m trips are planned for Good Friday across the UK as people head away for the Easter Weekend.
