Two Historic Pubs to Reopen in Penrith

Amid the recent closures announcements by businesses in recent weeks. Penrith has some good news with new chapters for two of Penrith’s historic pubs about to begin with plans submitted to Westmorland and Furness council for landlord enablement works for reopening of the Two Lions with plans to reopen later this year as a hotel and bar.

A short walk across Great Dockray the historic Dockray Hall is also set to reopen with the business now advertising for staff ahead of reopening its doors to the public.

The Grade One listed Dockray Hall is allegedly the former home of Richard III and is rumoured to have secret passages running between the pub and Penrith Castle. It closed in 2022 and has been for sale or to let since then.

The Two Lions is also a listed building with a grade two listing and contains a number of features including an ornate plaster ceiling many will not have seen for decades.

The Two Lions has been closed for decades and underwent major work as part of the Penrith New Squares development with the removal of some part of the building.

Eden District Council who owned until April 2023 owned the building has explored options to turn it into a business hub but plans never progressed due to the local government changes in Cumbria.
