Town Councillor and MP Visit Omega for Tour of Site

Westmorland and Lonsadale MP Tim Farron joined Penrith town Councillor S Davies to visit the Omega Proteins plant and have a tour of the site to find out how the factory operates.

Tim Farron Said “I am contacted regularly by residents in Newbiggin, Stainton,  Greystoke and Eamont Bridge about the unpleasant odour which comes from the Omega plant.”

“It was a very constructive visit where I was able to represent the views of local people. It was clear that the company are doing a lot of work to tackle this but that more needs to be done.”

“We spoke about where the odour came from, including machines breaking down and human error and the impact that this had on residents.  I urged Omega to continue with on-site training and development with their staff.”

Omega have undertaken a major upgrade to the site in an attempt to reduce odour emissions from the operation.

Tim added “One of the other issues which was raised is that there can often be a 2–3 day delay from when a resident reports an odour to the Environment Agency to when the EA then reports that to Omega. This is clearly unacceptable, and I will be pressing the EA to review this as a matter of urgency. I ask that residents remember to contact the company's odour hotline so that they can investigate any issue as soon as it happens.”

A spokesperson from Leo Group said, 'We were happy when Tim accepted our offer to visit the site and learn about our processes, our environmental responsibilities, and our contribution to both the local and national economy. We are pleased that we were able to educate him about how in-depth and rigorous our Environmental Permit is, as well as our close working relationship with the Environment Agency. Rendering plays a vital role in supporting British agriculture, and we are pleased that Tim has recognised this.   We remain committed to ongoing investment across all areas of our site, and we welcome anyone who wants to learn more, contact us directly
