Penrith Town Council at its meeting on Monday 15th December 2025 resolved to request an in-person meeting with the Environment Agency to discuss the formal testing of chemical emissions in Penrith.
The Town Council believes that it is essential to understand the nature of the chemicals that the community might be being exposed to and to identify and if there any substances hazardous to public health.
The town council hope that it will be possible to schedule a meeting with the Environment Agency in the New Year.
Although the town council has given no details around its concerns about hazardous chemicals Penrith is known to have high levels of pollution's such as Arsenic and Cadmium in and around the town although current data from Defra shows these levels have dropped over the last two years from the 2023 high levels locally.
The town council request to the environment agency comes after the town council held a meeting with Westmorland and Furness Council to discuss statutory nuisance investigations. A meeting that was described as disappointing by Penrith Mayor and council Chair Cllr Bowen during Mondays town council meeting
