Following the resignation of former town councillor for Penrith South Danny Smith earlier this month a by election has been called after the monitoring officer at Westmorland and Furness Council received a notice requesting an election be held signed by ten electors for the ward facilitated by local Libdems.
If the election is contested the By Election will be held in late November with an expected date of the 27th November with a contested town council by election costing tax payers in the region of £10,000 to hold.
The candidate elected will serve as a town councillor for just over a year when the full town council facing all out election in May 2027.
Mr Smith was elected in 2023 to Penrith Town Council as a Labour Councillor for Penrith South Ward with 159 votes, In May he announced he had resigned as a Labour Party member and would sit on the town council as an Independent councillor.
Members of Penrith town council on Monday evening expressed their thanks to Mr Smith for his time on the town council that included acting as deputy town Mayor and Vice chair of the Council.
