This Tuesday, 23rd December, three local students will take on an extraordinary challenge to support a lifesaving cause. Jacob Ostle, Oliver Nicholson, and Theo Winstanley, all from Ullswater Community College, will run a full marathon from Tim Hortons in Penrith, starting at 10:30am, to Carlisle Castle, in aid of the charity Hearts United, run by Donna Mills.
The students’ effort is more than a test of endurance; it is a mission to raise awareness and vital funds for a charity dedicated to improving heart health and saving lives in the community.
Hearts United provides:
Free heart screenings to detect hidden and potentially fatal heart conditions
CPR and defibrillator (AED) training, giving members of the community the skills to save lives
Wellbeing initiatives to encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle
The work of Hearts United is urgent. Every week in the UK, 12 young people die suddenly from undiagnosed heart conditions, and out-of-hospital cardiac arrests have a survival rate of less than 1 in 10 without immediate CPR. By supporting Hearts United, donations help to:
Identify people at risk before tragedy strikes
Train community members to respond in emergencies
Promote long-term heart health across the region
With Christmas just days away, this marathon is a reminder of the season’s true spirit — giving, caring, and looking out for one another. The Penrith community is encouraged to cheer on the runners, share their story, and donate to Hearts United. Every contribution can help save a life.
Jacob, Oliver, and Theo’s challenge offers more than than just Christmas spirit it provides and example of real courage, commitment, and compassion as an inspirational example of how young citizens of the local area are making a real difference in the community.
