Thousands Flocked to Enjoy the 2024 Winter Droving in Penrith

The clocks rolled back in Penrith today (Saturday 26th October) to a tradition 400 years in the making as thousands of people enjoyed a day of festivities as part of Penrith’s annual Winter Droving following a day of live musical, street theatre and a mix of entertainment, food and market stalls plus a funfair in Great Dockray.

As darkness fell the torchlight procession got underway on Drovers lane with the spectacular masked procession through the streets of Penrith.

The Winter Droving procession was led by the illuminated rams head that has become synonymous with the Winter Droving in Penrith carried through the town by members of the events headline sponsors Leo Group who have again sponsored the Winter Droving organised by Eden Arts and now in its 13th Year.

The illuminated rams head led the procession through the town centre with the streets lined with the crowds that gathered to take part in a tradition that goes back centuries in the town.

With animals masks, burning torches and bands, The air was filled with the sound of drums and trumpets and the crowds could feel the process as the vibrations from the drums pulsated giving a feeling of Penrith 400 years ago as livestock was driven through the town.

The procession made its way down Kingstreet and back along Princess street before arriving in Great Dockray at just after 7:30.
