Six New Deputy Lieutenants Appointed in Cumbria

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr Alexander Scott, has announce the appointment of six new Deputy Lieutenants, starting from today (1st October 2025), recognising their exceptional contributions to public service, community engagement, and the voluntary sector.

Deputy Lieutenants are voluntary, non-political appointments there is no application process for the role the appointments are made at the Lord-Lieutenant's discretion.

The newly appointed six Deputy Lieutenants Dr Julia Aglionby - Carlisle, Mrs Jacqueline Arnold MBE - Barrow-in-Furness, Mr Andrew Beeforth OBE - Wigton, Ms Caz Graham - Kendal, Mr Robert Morris-Eyton - Whitehaven, Mr Richard Ogden MBE – Penrith. Will be joining the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Lord Inglewood, and 24 Deputy Lieutenants across the county, assisting the Lord-Lieutenant in representing His Majesty the King and supporting civic life in Cumbria. Deputy Lieutenants serve in a voluntary capacity, dedicating their time and expertise to supporting local communities.

Deputy Lieutenants support the Lord-Lieutenant in civic, ceremonial, and community duties, including Remembrance events, church services, and official county ceremonies. They attend events, present awards, and promote the achievements of local people, communities, and businesses. Their work strengthens community engagement, fosters civic pride, and represents Cumbria at local events.

Deputy Lieutenants are appointed at the discretion of the Lord-Lieutenant, following approval from the Prime Minister. There is no application process. Appointments are made based on geographic need and candidates' significant contributions to public life, voluntary work, or community leadership. The Lord-Lieutenant ensures that appointments reflect the diversity and breadth of Cumbria's communities.

Julia Aglionby

Executive Director of the Foundation for Common Land and Professor of Practice in Protected Areas at the University of Cumbria. Formerly an environmental economist in SE Asia and agricultural valuer in Cumbria, specialising in improving farming and environmental outcomes on common land. Trustee of Susan's Farm CIO and co-founder of View from the River. Julia has in the past stood for Parliament, reflecting her commitment to public service. Lives near Armathwaite; enjoys outdoor swimming, including a 2023 swim of the 85-mile River Eden.

 

Jacqueline Arnold MBE

Business and community leader from Barrow-in-Furness. Chartered Accountant; held senior roles in public and private sectors including BAE Systems. First female Chair of the Cumberland Building Society. Awarded MBE in 2016 for services to the local economy.

 

 

Andy Beeforth OBE

Chief Executive of the Community Foundation since 1999. Leading philanthropy across Cumbria for over 26 years. Founding and current trustee of the National Emergencies Trust. Awarded OBE in 2010 for services to the voluntary sector. Former Parish Councillor and past trustee roles with medical and arts organisations.

 

Caz Graham

BBC Radio 4 presenter and reporter. Champion of Cumbrian communities for 25+ years. Patron of Carer Support South Lakes, Chair of Kendal Tennis Club, and columnist for Cumbria Life.

 

Robert Morris-Eyton

Farmer, land agent, and Managing Director of Beckside Construction Ltd (hydroelectric projects). Active in local agriculture and community initiatives. Based in South Cumbria.

 

Richard Ogden MBE

Career in public service and charitable work; focuses on youth development, sustainability, and community resilience. Actively supports multiple charities. Awarded MBE in 2024 for services to charitable causes.
