Service of Celebration marks 50th Anniversary of Cumbria

A 50th Anniversary of Cumbria Service of Celebration was held on Friday evening (4th October), at Carlisle Cathedral.

The service, was hosted by His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr. Alexander Scott, and brought together local residents, community leaders, and dignitaries. The evening celebrated not only the five decades since Cumbria’s formation but also the spirit of its people who have made it such a special place to live, work, and visit.

In his address, The Lord-Lieutenant reflected on the importance of the local community in shaping Cumbria’s success, noting:

“It is the dedication, resilience, and generosity of our people that make Cumbria truly unique. Today, we honour everyone who has contributed and sustained our economy and who continues to enrich our community life.”

The event celebrated not just Cumbria's stunning landscapes but its vibrant local culture, exemplified by performances such as the heartfelt rendition of D’ye ken John Peel by Rockcliffe CE Primary School Choir, which paid tribute to the county’s musical heritage. These local touches, including a reading by the Vice-President of the Lake District Dialect Society, underscored the celebration’s strong connection to Cumbria’s cultural roots.

The service was a heartfelt celebration, with the Lord-Lieutenant highlighting the profound sense of belonging that Cumbria’s residents feel. Guests were reminded that Cumbria’s beauty lies not just in its iconic landscapes but in the strength and kindness of its people. The service concluded with a reception where attendees, many of whom represented their local communities, shared stories of how they have contributed to the community’s growth over the years.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mr. Alexander Scott said: “The evening was a resounding success, bringing together people from all corners of Cumbria to celebrate our shared history and the incredible community that makes this county so special. The turnout and heartfelt reflections from everyone have reminded us of the deep connection we all have to this place. It has been an honour to be part of such a meaningful event, and I look forward to continuing this journey of growth and unity as we move into the next chapter of Cumbria's story."

The Dean of Carlisle added: “As we gathered in Carlisle Cathedral, we were reminded that the true beauty of Cumbria goes beyond its breathtaking landscapes - it is found in the compassion and unity of its people. From our teachers and healthcare workers to our volunteers and local businesses, this community embodies the values of generosity, service and togetherness. In the ancient surroundings of the cathedral church, we celebrated the soul of Cumbria: the people who, every day, create a place where all can thrive and feel at home."
