People across Cumbria are being encouraged to shine a spotlight on individuals who are making a difference through books, reading and storytelling by nominating them for The Queen's Reading Room Medal.
The newly launched award celebrates people who have gone above and beyond to inspire a love of reading within their communities. From volunteer-run book clubs and literacy projects to initiatives that tackle loneliness, improve wellbeing or increase access to books, the Medal recognises those harnessing the transformative power of stories to change lives.
The Medal is open to individuals aged 18 and over who have conducted their reading-related activities in the UK and have demonstrated a positive impact through championing reading, literature and storytelling. Nominations can be made by the individual themselves or by others.
The Queen's Reading Room describes the award as a celebration of "ordinary people who make an extraordinary impact" through their commitment to encouraging reading and helping others discover the benefits of books and stories.
The award recognises individuals who have:
Encouraged a love of reading within their communities.
Improved access to books and storytelling.
Supported literacy and lifelong learning.
Used reading to improve wellbeing and reduce isolation.
Inspired others to engage with literature and stories.
Amy Jenkin, Engagement and Communications Officer for the Cumbria Lieutenancy, said: "Cumbria is home to countless individuals who give their time to support reading, literacy and community wellbeing. Whether through a local library group, school initiative, community project or volunteer organisation, we know there are people across the county making a real difference to the lives of others through books and storytelling.
"This award presents a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate those unsung heroes whose dedication is helping people discover the joy and benefits of reading."
A distinguished judging panel, drawn from across the UK's literary, literacy and library sectors, will assess nominations based on commitment, initiative, widening access to reading and the impact they have achieved within their communities.
