Network Rail engineers have been working through the night in wet and windy conditions at the scene of Monday’s Avanti West Coast train derailment near Shap.
Overnight, the derailed train was successfully removed, allowing teams to complete repairs to the damaged overhead power lines. Work is now focused on earthworks following a landslip, along with repairs to track and signalling equipment affected by the incident.
Network Rail aims to have the line fully reopened by Wednesday, though ongoing bad weather could delay progress.
No train services are currently operating between Carlisle and Preston.
