Police Charge Man After Spate of Shoplifting Incidents in Penrith On Thursday

Police responded to a shoplifting in progress alert issued the Penrith Shop Watch radio system on Thursday afternoon.

A male in his 40’s was arrested for shoplifting and for several outstanding offences in other areas. With assistance from police in Durham, a vehicle was stopped with a second male arrested with stolen items seized from the vehicle.

Police have today confirmed that a male from Sunderland, aged in his 40s has been charged with Theft from Sainsburys, Penrith, Theft from Morrisons, Penrith, Common assault and 3 further theft offences in the North East.

He has been remanded into police custody and will appear at North Cumbria Magistrates Court on Saturday (31st of January 2026).

A spokesperson for Eden Neighbourhood Police said “This result follows from excellent work from security staff at the relevant stores, utilising the shop-watch radio, allowing Eden NPT and Response officers to respond to the incident and apprehend him still in the store”.
