Police Called to Deal with illegal Penrith Fireworks Display as 2024 Arrived.

As 2024 arrived in Penrith, Cumbria Police were called to deal with a group gathered in the centre of Penrith around the Musgrave Monument who had gathered, blocking the roads and setting off a volley of fireworks at the front of the towns Natwest Bank to celebrate the New Year.

The group had no events licence or road closure permits required to hold events in the town, along with no safety measures around the fireworks set off.

One town centre resident who witnessed the events said “it was a beautiful display, but I did think it was rather unsafe and strange there was no crowd control.”

Cumbria Police have confirmed that “Police were called to a report of fireworks being let off by the clocktower in Penrith town centre shortly after midnight on New Years Day (1 Jan 2024).”

The law says you must not set off or throw fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or other public places and that it’s an offence to throw or set off any firework including sparklers and category 1 fireworks in or into any highway, street, pavments or public space.

Anyone breaking the laws on fireworks can be fined an unlimited amount and imprisoned for up to 6 months for selling or using fireworks illegally.
