Plans submitted on behalf of the owner of Angel Square shopping precinct for alterations to allow for subdivision of a shop unit and to introduce a new access to the rear for part of the subdivided property along with plans to extend the public realm area associated with Angel Square.
The alterations are proposed to make the unit that currently is home to the Penrith Boots pharmacy and shop ‘more efficient’ and to make use of potentially ‘surplus upper floor’.
The associated public realm works seek to expand the retail opportunity of the precinct into an area currently used as a service yard for the precinct.
The proposed works include Internal alterations to facilitate the development of a new use on the upper floor suitable
for office/ health and leisure facilities in a space currently designed as storage/ warehousing.
Creation of a new rear entrance/ shopfront to create suitable access to new unit.
Along with the removal of existing external walls that enclose the current ‘service yard’ and opening this area up to public access as part of the expanded Angel Square shopping precinct.
The plans would see the ground floor unit become a standalone unit with the new rear unit which would be suitable for offices or a gym/ fitness suite or many other uses to meet market demand created with a new rear entrance giving access to a reception area with stair and lift access to the upper floor.
The Angel Square precinct was built in the 1980’s and has seen many changes over the years of the businesses occupying the units and changes to the retail sector.
Westmorland and Furness Council have approved two earlier lans for works to other units in Angel Square to create further additional units and space by the owners of the shopping precinct The Shires Estates Investments Limited who also owns retail properties on Middle gate, Queen street and Burrowgate in Penrith.
The planning application is currently open to public consultation until the 19th of January 2025.
