A Penrith hostel could be turned into a residential care home for up to four individuals who require varying low levels of support if the plans are approved by Westmorland & Furness Council.
The application for the change of use is currently under consultation and residents have until March 14 to submit their views.
According to a planning statement the applicant is Penrith-based Cumbria Quality Care and the site is at 19 Brunswick Square in the town.
It states: “The property subject of the application is a two-storey end-terraced property that until very recently operated as an independent hostel.
“The site operated a six-bedroom, 18-bed hostel, with a private garden and the provision of two on site car parking spaces. The property is bound in all directions by residential properties.
“The property is not a listed building; however, it is located within the Penrith Conservation Area.”
It states that the application site is located within Penrith town centre and it adds: “Given the site’s location within the settlement boundary of Penrith, and in close proximity to services, it is considered the proposal would contribute towards the sustainability of the area.”
According to the report it is proposed that the six-bedroom property will
provide four bedrooms, with one bedroom being used as an office and a safe space.
It adds: “The two bedrooms located on the top floor, which are currently used as a living and kitchen area, are proposed to remain the same. No construction works are proposed internally or externally.
“The home will be used for individuals who will require support due to having Learning Disabilities, Autism or ADHD.
“The applicants are a long-established local company, who will support said individuals to live harmoniously within their local community, access local and community services and contribute to Penrith’s local community.
” Base staffing levels will be two staff throughout the hours of 7am to 11pm and one sleep over staff between the hours of 11pm to 7am.
“Additional staffing will be in place to suit each individual’s needs and routines, enabling them to have the support they require to live their lives the way they wish to.”
