Plans Submitted to Create Pet and Equine Crematorium near Penrith

Plans have been submitted to create a small pet and equine crematorium near Penrith through the change of two farm buildings to create the pet crematorium.

The change of use application has been submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council, by Penrith based Planning Branch Ltd on behalf of the applicants Birchwood Barn who also operate the Eden Valley Crematorium located near to the site of the  proposed pet and equine crematorium.

The plans outline the transformation of two buildings at Whinfell House Farm just off the A66 into two crematoriums one for small pets and one for horses.

The proposed changes is for internal changes with no external changes to the fabric of the buildings other than the installation a single external flue added to one building.

The application states that “deceased pets or horses will usually be collected by the applicant from various vets on a regular basis,"

"There is also a room within the building to allow vets to visit the site and euthanise animals on the site."

Planned Operating hours for the pet and equine crematorium will be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with weekend by appointment.

Pet and Horse owners will be able to collect ashes directly from the crematorium or from their respective vets.

The proposed change of use to small pet crematorium and equine crematorium will provide a community facility and support the existing farm business and retention of the traditional buildings on the site. The agent for the applicant said adding “This would provide a community facility that does not existing within the Eden area and thus avoids the need for residents of Eden to travel to either Carlisle or South Lakeland areas.”
