Penrith.Town News Team Marks Earth Day with 100% Off-Grid Renewable Energy Milestone

This year marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, a global event celebrated annually on 22 April. Since its inception in the United States in 1970, Earth Day has grown into a worldwide movement, uniting millions of people in a shared mission to honour the achievements of the environmental movement and raise awareness of the urgent need to protect our planet.

The very first Earth Day saw 20 million people across the US take to the streets to protest against major environmental concerns, including oil spills, polluted rivers, and smog-choked skies. The movement’s impact was immediate. By the end of 1970, the US Environmental Protection Agency had been established and significant environmental laws were introduced or strengthened.

In 1990, Earth Day went global. Today, organisers estimate that more than one billion people across hundreds of countries participate in events to mark the occasion.

Each year, Earth Day adopts a new theme. For 2025, the focus is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, with a call to action to triple renewable energy generation globally by 2030.

The message comes at a time when the UK is already making strides in this direction. In the 12 months leading up to January 2025, over 40% of the UK's electricity was sourced from renewables such as solar, wind, biomass, and hydro. The year 2024 was particularly significant, setting a new record with renewable energy generating more than half of the country’s electricity.

And as part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability as a business, Penrith.Town News and our parent company have taken bold steps to reduce our reliance on grid electricity and embrace the potential of renewable energy.

We are proud to announce that our Penrith based office now operations off-grid, powered by renewable energy via solar panels and supported by an advanced battery storage system.

In January, we invested in a battery system from Bluetti, enabling us to cut our carbon footprint and also cut our electricity bills to zero. Our entire office now operates using the clean renewable energy via solar panels we installed without any grants or government support demonstrating what’s possible on a realistic budget for any home or business.

From our computers to the office kettle they are all now powered using the power of the Sun that charges the battery storage system from Bluetti.

And it doesn’t stop there. Even the web server that hosts this article, along with our content, runs on renewable energy. Sustainability is at the heart of our business, making Penrith.Town not only your orange hyperlocal news service but also sustainable and green.

Next month, we’ll be sharing an article on how we transitioned our business to fully renewable energy, and how you could do the same, whether at home or for your own small business.
