Penrith has been chosen as one of the key locations to welcome the Baton of Hope this September, as part of a powerful national campaign to raise awareness of suicide and promote mental wellbeing across the UK.
The Baton of Hope, a charitable initiative dedicated to inspiring a zero-suicide society, will arrive in Penrith on 7th September 2025, with a special event taking place at Penrith Leisure Centre.
Founded by bereaved fathers Mike McCarthy and Steve Phillip—who met through social media after losing their sons to suicide—the Baton of Hope has grown into a unifying symbol of connection, understanding, and change. The baton is travelling the country in a relay-style tour, drawing communities together in solidarity and support.
Local organisers for the event in Penrith who are rallying behind the message of the campaign said. “The inspiring UK tour is all about raising awareness around suicide and promoting hope,” said a spokesperson. “We’re shining a light on the brilliant organisations, clubs, and support groups across Eden that champion mental health and wellbeing.”
“Let’s come together to celebrate connection, raise awareness, and spread hope.”
Members of the community are invited to take part in the event. Whether you represent a local organisation, want to showcase your group, or are keen to volunteer on the day, you can express your interest by filling out the online form at: https://forms.office.com/r/S4XXWnSNwa
