Penrith Santander Avoids Closure But Reduces Opening to Just 3 Days A Week

Around 750 jobs are at risk of redundancy at Santander UK, as the high street lender announced 95 branch closures and sweeping changes across its network.

The banking giant said it is shutting 95 branches in June, while also cutting hours across 36 sites and switching 18 to be counter-free.

A Santander UK spokesman said: “As customer behaviour changes, we are ensuring that our branches remain fit for the future.

“Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside work cafes, counter-free branches and reduced hours branches, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face money management and guidance.”

“Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.”

From the 30th June, the majority of the reduced-hours branches will be open just three days a week – either Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 3pm, or Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 3pm and Saturdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm.

The Penrith branch is one of the branches that from June 30th open just three days a week:

Monday Closed

Tuesday 9.30am to 3pm

Wednesday Closed

Thursday 9.30am to 3pm

Friday Closed

Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm

Sunday Closed

The bank has said they carried out a major review of its branches in 2021 and since then, it’s customers are choosing to use Mobile, Online and Telephone Banking more, and branches less.

A more recent review of branches, looked at where they’re located, how they’re used and the other local banking options available.

A spokes person for Santandare said “As a result of our review findings, we’ve decided to reduce the opening hours of our Penrith branch.”

“When deciding to reduce the opening hours, we looked at how the branch is being used and how customers are banking in other ways.”

“93% of our branch customers already use a variety of ways to do their banking. 75% of our branch customers use our Online, Mobile or Telephone Banking services. 30% of our branch customers also use another Santander branch.”

“We’re aware of the impact of this decision and will be here for you in person to offer support and answer any questions.”
