Penrith Rotary Club Charity Golf Day raised £4,000 for Good Causes

The Penrith Rotary Club held their annual fundraising Charity Golf Competition at Penrith Golf Club on Friday 28 th July. Some 112 players from all over the North of England and the South of Scotland competed for the honours in what was a hotly contested competition with only 12 points separating the top 16 teams.

The team from Hather Financial Investments who were the outright winners with 100 points but the Sultans of Swing and the Sandrats teams each with 95 points were close behind. The winners scooped the voucher to play at the Silloth Golf Club and £200.

The highest scoring Rotary Team was the Whitehaven Castle Rotary who earned the bragging rights to the Penrith Rotary Club Silver Trophy and a voucher to play at Ulverston.

The winning Ladies team was the Gospeacocks from Grange Over Sands.

Eighteen of the surrounding Golf Clubs donated vouchers to play at their courses. In addition, there were many local sponsors who supported the event with cash, excellent prizes for the Tombola and the on-course refreshments.

Nilfisk Ltd donated a pressure washer and an industrial Vaccum Cleaner and these were raffled separately to raise money for the Salvation Army (Penrith) Food Bank.

Andrew Greenop, President of the Penrith Rotary in expressing the Club’s gratitude to all these sponsors, said that it was only through their generosity and that of all the participating players that the event raises so much money for those in need of our help. He also expressed thanks to Andrew Sowerby the Club Professional for his very able assistance with organising the competition, and to his fellow Rotarians and friends who administered the event.

The charity golf day is the Penrith Rotary Club’s biggest fundraiser and although the money raised this year was slightly less than last year, the £4,000 raised will be welcomed by the many good causes the Rotary support.

The main recipients this year will be the Rotary Charity “Shelterbox” which sends emergency shelters to disaster and war-torn areas around the world, and here at home the Salvation Army (Penrith) Food Bank will again benefit.
