Penrith MP has Labour Party Whip Restored after Three Months as an Independent MP

Markus Campbell-Savours MP for Penrith and Solway has had the Labour Whip restored today, 6 March 2026.

Today the Labour party Chief Whip the Rt. Hon Jonathan Reynolds MP has restored the Labour Whip to Markus Campbell-Savours MP for Penrith and Solway.

Penrith and Solway MP Marcus Campbell-Savours was suspended from the Labour Party in December for rebelling against the government inheritance tax for farmers in a vote.

Markus Campbell-Savours MP was the only Labour MP to vote against the controversial change with other Labour MP’s choosing to abstain from voting.

Speaking on the return of the Labour Party whip today Markus Campbell-Savours MP said: “It’s about time…

“Farmers were told the Government wouldn’t introduce inheritance tax on farms and I objected to them breaking this promise.

“Whilst I am relieved to have the Labour whip back, I am more relieved the Government delivered a major U-turn before Christmas. One I know will make a significant difference to many farming families in Cumbria.

“Having the whip removed is not a pleasant experience and whilst I have no desire to make a habit of it, I will always do what I can to look after our people in Cumbria.”
