Penrith MP fails in Third Selection Bid to be Parliamentary Candidate

The MP for Penrith and the Border has failed in his bid to be selected for the parliamentary seat of former prime minister, Sir John Major.

Dr Neil Hudson MP was shortlisted for seat of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire As one of the Four Candidates who were up for the selection. Dr Hudson was as the only candidate serving as a current MP but he failed to make the final two in the selection process.

Huntingdon is considered a safe Conservative seat once held by former prime minister, Sir John Major.

This is the third seat that Dr Hudson has tried to become the candidate for after his current Penrith and the Border constituency, will be scrapped at the next election following boundary changes to constituencies.

Dr Hudson had originally stood in a selection contest to become the Conservative candidate for the new Penrith and the Solway seat but lost out to current Workington MP, Mark Jenkinson. In July Hudson then stood  In a selection contest to become the candidate for the seat of former health secretary, Matt Hancock in West Suffolk again failing to secure the candidate position to Nicholas Timothy CBE a former Downing Street Chief of staff to Theresa May.

The candidate selected for the Huntingdon constituency was Ben Obese-Jecty who has served in the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now works in the financial sector.

Among those attending and voting in the selection of the candidate was the former MP and Prime Minister, Sir John Major.

It’s believed Dr Hudson had been considering standing for the Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency, that will under the constituency changes cover part of his current Penrith and The Borders constituency. However he is not believed to now be among the candidate choice for the Westmorland and Furness constituency according to a member of the local association in Kendal.

Dr Hudson was elected as MP for Penrith and The Border in 2019 after a controversial selection process that resulted in long standing party members and local association officers quit the party due to the selection of Dr Hudson as the Penrith and The Border candidate in 2019.
