Penrith fire crews were called support crews from Alston and Lazonby to tackle an outbuilding blaze in a rural area at Garrigill, near Alston.

Crews from Alston, Penrith and Lazonby were called at around 3.05pm yesterday, Friday March 14, the fire.

Alston fire crew, with the assistance of the farmers had set up a portable pump to supply the water to the incident prior to the arrival of the Penrith fire crew.

Who on arrival at the scene used jets externally to tackle the blaze due to a possibility of the roof collapsing.

Fire crews also set up another pump to redirect fire water run off reducing contaminants entering the river.

A spokesperson for Penrith Fire Station said: “Rural incidents like this pose challenges to crews. In this case, we were lucky to have a river running through the farm.”

“Crewing at our rural stations can be challenging and the Alston crew did an absolutely amazing job with minimal crew before Penrith and Lazonby could get there to support them.”
