Penrith Braces for Months of Town Centre Road Closures

In early 2024, Penrith residents and businesses will face a significant disruption through the town centre and local roads around the town as Northern Gas Networks embarks on a comprehensive project to upgrade the town's gas infrastructure. The extensive works will involve replacing ageing metal gas mains pipes with new plastic pipes, a move aimed at enhancing the reliability and safety of the gas supply.

The improvements will come at a cost, as roads in the town centre will face months of closures and diversions.

To keep the community informed about the project and its impact, Northern Gas Networks is hosting two community drop-in sessions at the George Hotel on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. These sessions, scheduled from 12-1pm and 5-6pm, will provide residents and businesses with details about the project, including the timeline of road closures and diversions.

The road closures will occur in stages, with the initial closures beginning on January 3rd, 2024 lasting through until early March. Westmorland and Furness Council have granted permits to enable the works and the associated road closures and diversions, which will affect various parts of the town centre and other local roads.

The closure permits issued by the council are as follows:

Middlegate: January 3rd, 2024, 8:00 AM, to January 26th, 2024, 11:59 PM.

Corney Square: January 3rd, 2024, 8:00 AM, to January 26th, 2024, 11:59 PM.

Bottom of Brunswick Road: January 3rd, 2024, 8:00 AM, to January 26th, 2024, 11:59 PM.

Middlegate, Devonshire Street: January 22nd, 2024, 8:00 AM, to February 5th, 2024, 11:59 PM.

Market Square, King Street: February 5th, 2024, 8:00 AM, to March 8th, 2024, 11:59 PM.

In addition to the closures by Northern Gas Networks, Westmorland and Furness Council will also temporarily close a section of Southend Road on the one-way system between the junction with Victoria Road and the junction with Kilgour Street. This closure will be in effect from January 29th, 2024, 8:00 AM, until February 2nd, 2024, 4:30 PM, to enable the council to carry out drainage improvements on the carriageway.

The months of road closures will pose challenges for the residents and businesses in Penrith. Residents and business are encouraged to attend the community drop-in sessions at the George Hotel on November 15th, 2023, to learn more about the project and to ensure they are adequately prepared for the upcoming disruptions.
