Penrith And Eden Facing Some of the Highest Council Tax Bills in Westmorland and Furness

Westmorland and Furness Council will meet in Kendal to set the councils budget for the next year and also set the council tax paid by households across Westmorland and Furness district to help fund the council's budget and plans.

The Council tax bill from April for households in the Penrith Town Council parish area covering the 2025/26 council tax bill made up of Westmorland and Furness Council, Cumbria Police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue and Penrith Town Council precepts will be.

Band A £ 1,616.71

Band B £ 1,886.18

Band C £ 2,155.63

Band D £ 2,425.08

Band E £ 2,963.98

Band F £ 3,502.89

Band G £ 4,041.79

Band H £ 4,850.16

Westmorland and Furness Council Tax required for 2025/26 to be paid by all council tax paying properties in the district is £184,527,771.

The Police & Crime Commissioner for Cumbria has set a budget for 2025/26 resulting in a precept of £31,155,775.

The Cumbria Commissioner Fire and Rescue Authority has set a budget for 2025/26 resulting in a precept of £9,441,931.

Penrith Town Council have set a total precept demand of £514,740.10 payable by households in Penrith for 2025/25.

Penrith is once again along with other parts of the former Eden area facing some of the highest council tax bills across the Westmorland and Furness district. With Penrith the ninth most expensive council tax across all parish areas in the district and among the key towns in Westmorland and Furness, Penrith is again the most expensive council tax due to the parish precept by the town council based on the tax base for the town with residents in Penrith set to pay on average £66 more in council tax for a Band D property than a Band D property in Barrow.

While Eden faces some of the highest council tax charges across the district some communities in Eden will also receive some of the lowest after some parishes have decided not to charge any precept this year including Sockbridge and Tirril with a Band D this year paying £83.92 less than a Band D household in Penrith after the parish council voted to not charge residents any precept for 2025/26 to “provide support to residents facing increases from other parts of the council tax.”

Westmorland and Furness Council will meet at Kendal Town Hall on Thursday the 27th February to formally approve the council tax charges for households with bill sent out to households in March.

Some households are also facing council tax bills of 200% for those properties classed as second homes in the district.
