Notice appears on Penrith Branch as Solicitors Firm Suddenly Stops Trading

A Solicitor’s with branches in Penrith and other parts of Cumbria has suddenly stopped trading from its branches across the county today with a notice displayed on the door of its Penrith branch informing clients the firm can 'no longer trade' due to 'regulatory matters.'

The sign appeared on the door of Butterworths Solicitors' premises in Penrith today. Customers have been greeted by the notice on the door of the office unaware the situation.

The sign, which was fixed to the door of Butterworths' cornmarket office, reads: "Due to regulatory matters the PM Group businesses carried out within this building can no longer trade."

Butterworths was bought by PM Law Ltd a Sheffield based law firm in 2024 And has treated in Penrith from a property shared with an estate agent that is unaffected by the situation with Butterworths Solicitors.

Penrith.Town spoke to the Solicitors Regulation Authority regarding the sudden closure.

An spokesperson for the Solicitors Regulation Authority said: "When law firms close, they must do so in accordance with our rules to make sure that client interests are protected.

"This includes advising those with live matters about seeking new representation, returning archived files to past clients and the redistribution of any monies held."

The firm has been approached for comment on the situation.
