Northern Lights Could Light Up the New Years Eve Sky

The northern lights could be visible at relatively southerly latitudes across the UK tonight as millions celebrate New Year, with breaks in the cloud forecast tonight across Cumbria, the Sun could deliver a free light show to see in 2025.

The forecast for Northern Lights comes as the Earth has been hit by a massive eruption from the Sun which could cause problems for infrastructure but also lead to stunning Northern Lights on New Year’s Eve.

A large coronal mass ejection left the Sun on Sunday sending a blast of energy at the Earth that started to arrive earlier today (Tuesday 31st December), potentially in time to lead to the northern lights being visible at relatively southerly latitudes as millions celebrate New Year.

The first “shock” from the CME arrived on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Space Weather Prediction Centre at the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The current cloudy weather is forecast to ease as we approach Midnight and could see clouds clearing to allow for some fireworks from the Sun to ring in 2025.
