National Highways Issue Reminder of 40mph speed limits on A66 around Penrith

National Highways are reminding drivers travelling between Center Parcs and Kemplay roundabout and between Kemplay and J40 that there is a 40mph speed limit in place along these sections of the A66.

The limit is in place for the safety of everyone while slow moving vehicles join the A66 from the newly created accesses that National Highways are creating to enable them to complete enabling work prior to the A66 upgrade scheme starting.

National Highways have also got temporary traffic lights in operation on the A66, between B6262 Brougham and Center Parcs junctions, to allow safe access to and from construction areas for large construction vehicles.

These traffic lights will operate only during off-peak hours, 9.30am to 3.30pm, and when needed to allow vehicles to turn.

National Highways have said they will continue to monitor traffic to minimise impact and delays on the A66.

From Tuesday 26th August the A686 eastbound between Kemplay roundabout and Carleton Underpass will be closed overnight from until Saturday 20 September, between 8pm and 6am each night for work to construct another access point for a works site to enable utilities to be moved as part of the A66 upgrade preparations.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time and plan ahead of travelling along the A66 around Penrith.

Alongside the A66 speed restrictions National Highways have speed restrictions on the M6 between Junction 40 and Hackthorpe for work on the Clifton Railway Bridge and Lowther Bridge that will remain in place for the next year that have already seen thousands of drivers issued speeding tickets and fines.

Despite all the enabling works underway along the A66 no delivery timetable has yet been finalised after the delays of the Government’s Spending Review, that has now confirmed the funding for the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine scheme.

Despite the funding confirmation National Highways and the Department for Transport now have to work to identify the most efficient and cost-effective delivery timetables for the A66 upgrade project before the upgrade gets underway.

National Highway have said “further update on delivery timings, as part of the next Road Investment Strategy which is scheduled to be published in March of next year.”
