Drivers using the M6 South of Penrith are being reminded of further weekend overnight closures tonight (Saturday 15th August) and Sunday night as major works continue on Lowther Bridge at Clifton.
The M6 will be completely closed Northbound between Junction
39 at Shap and Junction 40 at Penrith from 10pm until 6am tonight, Saturday 15
August, and Southbound between junction 40 and junction 39 from 10pm until 6am on
Sunday night 16th August with further closures taking place on Saturday 22nd
and Sunday 23rd August.
The overnight closures are needed while National Highways
installs new permanent expansion joints on the 50-year-old Lowther Bridge,
which carries thousands of vehicles over the River Lowther every day.
The bridge is currently undergoing a £9 million
refurbishment project, which includes replacing the expansion joints,
waterproofing and resurfacing the bridge decks, improving drainage, repairing
the concrete deck and supporting structures, and renewing the central
reservation barrier.
National Highways expects the installation of the permanent
expansion joints to be completed by the end of August.
During the overnight closures, signed diversion routes will
be in place using the A6 and A66 between Junction 40 at Penrith and Junction 39
at Shap.
Drivers are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time
for their journeys.
