Met Office Issues Yellow Weather Warning for Cumbria as Storm Babet batters the UK

The Met Office issued the yellow weather warning for strong wind today, Friday 20th October with the warning in place as winds set to last for 24 hours.

The Met Office said that Cumbria will be affected by strong easterly winds through Friday, and also into Saturday.

Parts of Cumbria are also covered by an Amber weather warning for Heavy rain over the next 24 hours.

Storm Babet has already brought significant impacts, particularly to eastern Scotland.

A second red warning is now in place for Saturday for parts of eastern Scotland where the area could see a further 70-100 mm of rain, with the highest accumulations over the hills.

Cumbria Police have said: "Please take extra care on the roads this afternoon and into the weekend.”

"We're expecting wet and windy weather for much of the weekend so please drive with caution as you may come across flooded roads, branches in the road, etc."

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Andy Page, said: “This is not usual autumn weather. This is an exceptional event, and we are likely to continue to see significant impacts with the potential for further flooding and damage to properties. There are numerous National Severe Weather Warnings in place for both rain and wind over the coming days.”
