MayDay MayDay: Town Council Asks for Feedback as Cost of Event Spiral Over £25,000

Penrith Town Council is facing criticism after it emerged the cost of the town’s first-ever council-run May Day event has ballooned to at least £25,000, far exceeding the original £15,000 budget — and final costs are still months away from being confirmed.

The event, held on 5th May and touted as a new take on the town’s traditional May Day celebrations, has drawn mixed reactions from the public. While some praised its community feel, others lamented the lack of traditional elements and expressed concern over how the event was managed.

In a bid to salvage public opinion, the town council is now offering residents a chance to win a £50 voucher for completing a feedback survey — but responses must be submitted before 5pm on Monday, 19th May.

According to sources, the council failed to secure any acts or entertainment until as late as Christmas, leaving officers scrambling to book performers without going through competitive tendering processes — a move that has likely contributed to the spiralling costs. The council is said to have prioritised avoiding reputational damage over prudent financial planning.

Despite receiving £5,000 from Penrith BID and £2,000 from Westmorland & Furness Council to support the event, scrutiny has intensified over the council’s recent £4,500 payment back to Penrith BID for an App and the Marmalade Festival — raising further questions about the council's financial oversight.

While the council heralded the event as a success, many locals disagreed. One resident commented:

“Bring back the floats — it will never be the same. Too many restrictions. Health & safety has ruined everything.”

Another remarked:

“Have to say I thought May Day was brilliant this year and much more community-focused — so well done to those involved.”

Meanwhile, the Penrith Lions, who previously organised the event for many years, stepped in to provide vital volunteer support on the day. They managed to raise £696.32 through their stall and street collection — funds that will go back into supporting local people, unlike the growing costs currently burdening taxpayers.
