Man is jailed for vicious Penrith assault

A man who carried out a vicious assault inside a Penrith address has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Nigel Burton, 39, of Southend Road, Penrith admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday (1 Feb).

The court heard how Burton travelled to Castlegate, Penrith at around 11.20pm on 11 December 2023, then forced his way into the address.

He then violently attacked a man inside, punching him repeatedly to the face before picking up a mug and smashing it over the victim’s head.

The attack went on for some time and also included Burton throwing various items at the victim. Burton then walked from the address, leaving the victim with his injuries, which included lumps, bumps and cuts to his head and face.

Upon his arrest, Burton gave no comment responses in interview. However, he admitted the offence at court.

Detective Constable Sharon Baber said: “This was a sustained and vicious attack which could easily have resulted in more serious injuries.

“Such behaviour is unacceptable. We would urge people to take a stand against violence and report any such offences to the police immediately so that action can be taken.”
