Incident at Penrith Boots store

Emergency services have been responding to an incident at Penrith Boots store.

Police and fire crews are on the scene with fire crews working in the building with breathing apparatus.

Fire crews are venting the building of smoke currently before assessing the situation further although It’s understood no one was inside the store at the time of the incident.

A police spokesman said however it was not a fire that had caused the streets and Boots store to fill with smoke. The incident was as a result of alarms in the building that set off anti burglary smoke protectors.

Cumbria Fire services have confirmed that they turned out crews to reports of a building fire at Penrith Boots store this evening with crews and one appliance from Penrith and one from Lazonby.

On arrival at the Boots store two fire crew wearing breathing apparatus entered the property with one hose reel jet and a thermal image camera.

After investigating it was discovered that the burglar alarm had been activated which causes synthetic smoke to enter the property as a deterrent. Fire crews ventilated the store then handed the incident over to the store manager and the Police.
