North Cumbria Integrated Care Trust have said they are currently experiencing significant outbreaks of flu at their Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital sites. To safeguard patients they are restricting all visiting except for maternity, paediatric, end of life and the most critical cases.
People are asked to please avoid routine visits to friends and relatives for any other reason.
The restrictions on visiting come as Cumbria along with the rest of the UK is seeing a significant spike in cases of Flu, Norovirus and Covid19 leading to increasing pressure on A&E departments.
The NCIC Trust have said “Please also remember that our A&E departments are for the most serious cases. Please consider alternatives such as your GP, pharmacist or the NHS 111service for less serious conditions.”
“No matter how busy our A&E departments are, the most seriously ill and injured patients will always be seen first and as quickly as possible.”
Current wait times for A&E at the Cumberland Infirmary are around four hours with current wait times at Penrith’s Urgent Treatment Centre around one and a half hours.
