National Highways are closing the M6 tonight (Tuesday 27th January) from 10pm until 6am tomorrow morning (Wednesday 28th January).
The emergency closure is due to the Southbound carriageway of the M6 breaking up through the Clifton / Lowther Bridge roadworks.
National Highways said they “have been filling the potholes under rolling blocks, but with the recent cold/wet weather cannot keep on top of it and machine patching is required”.
The emergency closure comes just two weeks after National Highways celebrated reopening the section of road 13 hours early from the Clifton Railway bridge closure.
The M6 diversion route overnight for all southbound traffic will be via the A6 between 10pm and 6am with speed warning signs in operation along the diversion route.
National Highways have said they understand this is less than ideal coming of the back of the rail closures, but they have no option but to carry out the works to keep the carriageway safe.
