Drivers on M6 Warned to expect Delays as Another Slow-Moving Abnormal Load Heads North on Sunday

Another abnormal load movements is taking place along the M6 North bound past Penrith on Sunday (14 September) from 7am.

The slow-moving abnormal load will travel between Heysham docks to Harker near Carlisle via M6 Northbound to gain access to the Harker site the load will travel last Carlisle into Scotland to allow the vehicle and load to turn around onto the M6 Southbound back down to Junction 44.

The supergrid transformers are estimated to arrive around 5pm and subject to weather and delays expected to pass by Penrith around 2pm.

The transformer is part of National Grids new £60m 132,000 volt substation at Harker near Carlisle.

National Grid and Electricity North West recently hosted a tour of the new substation with representatives from Westmorland and Furness Council , Cumberland Council and National Energy System Operator to learn about how the substation will provide even more capacity to homes and business across Cumbria, as well as supporting network improvements and allow customers to adopt more low carbon technologies once the new facility is completed.

Long delays could occur between Kendal and Penrith with lane closures and speed restrictions in place near Tebay and Clifton as part of highways and network rail projects taking place.

National Highways are advising drivers to allow more time for journeys and to take care and patience when overtaking in lane three.

Another abnormal slow-moving load will also travel North to Harker next Sunday 21st September.
