Saturday 22nd November has been announced as the date of the annual Penrith sparkle event when the towns Christmas lights will be switched on, Penrith’s Town centre will be filled with music and elves and plenty of glorious lights! Once again plans are underway which include a collection of street performers, local live music, Santa, parade, food stalls and small fun fair.

This year entrants for the Parade will be ‘anything wheeled’! This means the organisers would like cycling groups, mobility scooters, hot rods, vintage trucks… anything quirky that can be decorated and join the fun!

The Parade, which sets off at 5pm, which will lap the town centre twice before parking up on display. The ‘Christmas-ified’ vehicles travel through town with music and Santa! Monies raised will go to Penrith Mountain Rescue. Applications open until 24th Oct so those interested need to head to the Penrith BID website as soon as possible to fill in an application and pay a donation of £5.

The centre will be a hive of activity for those enjoying an afternoon shopping. From 12noon a host of food and drink stalls and small rides will fill Devonshire, later joined by Santa and his elves from 2pm. Then the day rolls into a variation of choirs and local musicians until the ‘Lit Up Parade’ at 5.30pm. Santa alights the stage to turn on the lights at 6pm with the Mayor of Penrith and local character known to most people in Penrith, Roland.

Event Manager, Annabel Candler from Creativise Events, explained:

“Last year the town had a wonderful community atmosphere which we would love to create again. Locals of all ages filled the town and the feedback we had was amazing. The town was buzzing! I just hope that this year each business in the town takes hold of the opportunity. Show off what you have so people are enticed to come back!”

Annabel continued:

“For each business in the centre we created a ‘cheat sheet’ to aid any type of business that wishes to make the most of the experience. I just hope those who want to keep their business thriving can see this as a great chance to showcase their products or services. This is a creative chance to really stand out! Give them a competition, activity, tasters, or simply dress up and join in the festive cheer.”.

Dan Harding, Vice Chairman for Penrith BID, commented:

“This community event, sponsored and supported by some fantastic companies, is a great start to the festive season in Penrith and should be a great boost for the area. We invite all to take advantage of the opportunity and showcase your products and services to those coming specially for the celebration. Make Penrith a place to come back to and cherish.”

The sparkle event and lights have again been sponsored by the Leo Group who has donated thousands of pounds annually to the towns Christmas lights and sparkle event.

A spokesperson for the Leo Group said: “Leo Group is proud to sponsor these fantastic local events.
