‘Danger to life’ Amber weather warning issued for the Penrith and Cumbria.

The Met Office has warned of a 'danger to life' as it issues Amber Weather warning due to the icy surfaces as freezing rain is set to hit Penrith and the wider region on Sunday The Met Office issued the Amber warning for ice across Cumbria and the North as a period of freezing rain and snow is expected to cause disruption across the region.

The wintry weather is due to move across the region on Sunday, 18 December, with the warning in place from 9am until 8pm as the freezing rain could last for up to four hours in some areas.

The Amber alert applies to most of Cumbria with Penrith and Eden fully covered by the Amber alert forecast area with other areas of Cumbria, Lancashire, the Midlands and North East also affected.

The Met Office has warned that the icy conditions could lead to injuries from slips and falls on pavements, while driving conditions may also be dangerous with the possibility of collisions, road closures and longer journey times.

The winter weather could potentially disrupt bus, train and air travel, and the Met Office has also said that there is a "good chance" that power cuts may occur.

A less severe Yellow weather warning for snow and ice is also in place across the whole of Cumbria and most of the UK on Sunday from 7am until 9pm.

This means that there could still be risk of injury, travel delays and power cuts even in the areas not covered by the Amber alert.

Advice is to consider only travelling is essential and be ready possible power cuts.
