CRY for Eden Marks 1,000th Heart Screening in Milestone Weekend

CRY for Eden is celebrating a landmark moment — completing its 1,000th heart screening in the Eden area. Since the project began just 18 months ago, 1,017 young people aged 14–35 have been checked for hidden heart conditions, with 65 referred for further investigation that could prove life-saving.

Cumbrian housebuilder Genesis Homes has chosen CRY for Eden as their Charity of the Year for 2025, with the aim of raising an incredible £14,000 — enough to fund an entire screening weekend for over 200 young people. These potentially life-saving screenings can detect hidden heart conditions that often go unnoticed.

Genesis Homes attended the most recent screening session last weekend, marking the milestone of the 1,000th person screened. 14-year-old Ben was presented with a specially handcrafted hamper from Genesis Homes to celebrate the achievement.

Nicky Gordon, Managing Director of Genesis Homes, said:

“The work CRY for Eden do in our local area is nothing short of outstanding, and we’re thrilled to have been part of the 1,000th screening. To reach such a milestone after only 18 months of screening is remarkable, and Donna and the team should be incredibly proud of the positive impact they’re making in our community.”

While the partnership with Genesis Homes is a huge boost, the majority of CRY for Eden’s funding still comes from the tireless fundraising efforts of their small volunteer team and the generosity of local people.

Screenings are delivered in partnership with Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) and have been hosted at local venues including Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS) in Penrith and Penrith Rugby Club, whose hospitality during the latest event was outstanding.

Organiser Donna Mills said:

“Genesis Homes have given us a fantastic lift by making us their Charity of the Year, but it will take the continued backing of the whole community to keep these screenings going. Every young person screened is a step towards saving a life, and the 65 referrals we’ve made so far show how vital this work is.”
