Crowds Gathered to Enjoy a New Penrith May Day Celebration that Remembered the Past and Delivered Something New

The centre piece of this year’s Penrith May Day was a Walking Parade that featured Penrith Players, Bjamba, the Town Band, Penrith Lions Club and Eden Dance, in a colourful procession filled with music, dance, and reflected on the past and looked to the future as Penrith’s streets came to life with the crowds enjoying a raft of free entertainment and street performers and a very special zip wire from the roof top of St Andrews Church turning teddy bears into highwire acts as they zipped down the wire to the children waiting for them.

This years May Day also marked the passing of the baton from Penrith Lions to Penrith Town Council who organised and funded this years May Day event, but the day also marked another passing of the generational baton or tractor key.

For many years, George Wilson pulled the David Brown Cropmaster tractor as part of the Penrith May Day Parade with the iconic Lions Head leading many May day parades through the town. Sadly, George passed away in March.  Leading this year’s parade, George’s Great Grandson, Jack Winter was leading the Penrith May Day Parade towing the iconic Lions Head.

The Penrith Lions Club taking a supporting role in this year’s event were also collecting for charitable causes alongside the Lions Head, marking their 50th Anniversary too.

Cllr Doug Lawson, Penrith Town Council Chair & Penrith Mayor said: “Penrith Town Council is proud to support this heartfelt tribute as part of Penrith May Day 2025.”

“The council is excited to be able to blend much-loved traditions with exciting new additions to Penrith May Day — creating a day to remember for all.”

“Having Jack lead the walking parade, pulling the iconic lion’s head, using his great-grandfather’s David Brown Cropmaster tractor, is a touching nod to tradition.”

“It’s especially meaningful as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Penrith Lions Club, whose members will be collecting for their charitable causes alongside the lion’s head — a true reflection of community spirit and continuity.”
