Councillors meeting in Penrith today have voted to approve plans to construct a 49.2MW, 11 engine gas power plant at Shap.
Members of the public spoke in objection to the plans for the gas peeking power plant highlighting concerns around climate impacts locally and globally.
Following the representations from the public and the applicants agent councillors voted unanimously to follow the officers recommendation to approve the plans with 20 conditions including restrictions on the hours of operation annually.
The company submitted the application to build the natural gas powered peeking power plant with a 25 year lifespan but has now confirmed the plant equipment is also hydrogen ready and could enable the plant to use hydrogen as an alternative fuel source in the future.
