Councillors meeting in Penrith agree £43.893 million Waste Disposal budget for Cumbria

proposed draft waste disposal budget for Cumbria has been agreed by senior councillors at a meeting in Penrith today (Monday, March 3).

Members of Cumberland and Westmorland & Furness Councils’ joint executive committee met at Voreda House to consider a report – Waste Inter Authority Agreement (WIAA): Annual Budget Review 2025/26 – which states that draft annual budgets are subject to approval by members of the committee each year.

They were asked to approve the overall Waste Disposal budget for the next financial year with a combined budget value of £43.893 million which is an increase of £1.083 million compared with the current budget.

The project agreement is subject to the WIAA, which was entered into on March 31, 2023, between Cumberland Council, which is the host authority, and Westmorland and Furness Council, which is the recipient, for the management of the waste disposal contract.

The bulk of the budget funds the BIFFA UC PFI unitary charge and it is proposed that this be increased from £28,455,271 to £29,813,700.

The report states: “The waste disposal service contributes to the Westmorland and Furness Council Plan: people, climate, communities, economy and culture, customers, workforce.

“We want to enable our communities to flourish and take control of the things that need doing to make them great places to live, work and thrive.

“Sustainable, inclusive, economic growth to support the development of a circular economy; customers and communities’ needs are at the heart of designing our services, with customers able to access services and information easily using a channel of their choice.

“We will deliver a service that supports employee wellbeing, nurture talent, and create a healthy working environment that enables everyone to fulfil their potential and a place where the whole workforce is focused on delivering great services.

“In delivering excellent public services, Cumberland Council wants to be a high performing council. Our services have a direct and indirect impact on our residents’ health and wellbeing.

“We want our residents to benefit from excellent, efficient, and enterprising public services. We will deliver what they need, when they need it with a focus on collaboration, dialogue and delivering strategic impact at a local level.”
