Councillors meeting on Wednesday evening at Voreda House approved the council’s new Penrith Parking Protocol that will see changes to some on-street parking in the town along with new rules for resident permits.
Under the new protocol, households will be able to apply for a maximum of two registered permits along with a Visitor Permit, which allows up to 60 parking sessions per calendar year for guests. A new Flexible Second Permit will also be introduced, which is not assigned to a specific vehicle and must be kept at the registered property.
Properties with a driveway or garage, however, will not be entitled to a permit for on-street parking under the council’s new protocol.
Councillors also voted to approve the council’s new Off-Street Parking Traffic Regulation Order to remove the existing off-street parking at Mansion House as part of a new consolidated order of existing off-street parking in the local area.
The removal of the parking at Mansion House will clear the way for the council to sell the property, which has not been used by the council for a number of years.
Members of the Eden Locality Board also voted to progress proposals for a new 20mph speed limit in Penrith to statutory consultation and advertisement of a Traffic Regulation Order that will allow the council to introduce the new 20mph limits in areas of Penrith, as well as Clifton, Greystoke, Gamblesby, Glassonby, Sockbridge and Tirril, Great Asby and Stainton.
At the start of the meeting, councillors heard from a resident of Castletown who questioned the council’s decision to remove Castletown from the proposals to introduce 20mph speed limits after the town council agreed to drop the area from the plans.
Mr Thomson questioned the council’s decision after local residents had campaigned for the introduction of 20mph speed limits in Castletown and had put forward proposals.
The chair of the meeting told Mr Thomson that although Castletown was not included in the current statutory consultation, the council plans to put forward a Castletown-specific consultation next year on the introduction of 20mph speed limits.
