Westmorland and Furness Council is preparing a new Local Plan to guide development and land use across the district. As part of this work, they are launching a second call for sites to identify land that could meet a wide range of future development needs.
In 2024 the council invited landowners, developers, agents, community organisations and members of the public to submit land that may be suitable, for Housing, Employment, Local Green Space, Health facilities, Waste Sites, Mixed use, and more!
Westmorland and Furness Council are now inviting submissions to a second Call for Sites as part of the preparations for a new Local Plan.
The council said “We are seeking a wide range of land development opportunities that could help meet future development needs across Westmorland and Furness. “
“Increase the range of land available for development across the local authority area”.
“Give landowners, agents, and communities another chance to submit land”.
What types of sites can be submitted?
Housing
Employment
Mixed use sites
Waste
Minerals
Retail
Leisure
Open space / cummunity use / gree space
Local green space
Health facilities
Transport infrastructure
Habitat creation / nature recovery
Allotments
Education facilities
Burial grounds
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pitches and Travelling Showpeople plots
There are site size thresholds for particular categories of sites:
Housing sites - must be 0.2ha or larger, or able to accommodate 5 or more dwellings.
Employment sites - must be 0.25ha or larger, or capable of providing at least 500 sqm of employment floor space.
All other uses - no minimum size threshold.
Housing sites within the National Landscape - no minimum threshold as these sites are expected to be smaller.
If you submitted a site during the first Call for Sites in 2024, you do not need to resubmit your site through the Second Call for Sites. You can view previously submitted sites on the councils Interactive Map here.
