Council Issue Statment on Care Home Closure Ahead of Closed Door Council Meeting

Westmorland and Furness Council had today issued a statement regarding Applethwaite Green Care Home in Windermere and Grisedale Croft Care Home in Alston following our report on the council plans to discuss both care homes in a private meeting of the councils cabinet on Tuesday meeting at Redhills.

In the statement the council said “We recognise that reports in the media about our considerations around the future of two local care homes will be concerning for residents, their families and staff.”

“At its meeting next week, Cabinet will consider two reports setting out whether to proceed to consultation on the future of the two homes. No decisions have been taken at this stage.”

“Our priority is, and will continue to be, the wellbeing of residents and the support of staff. Anyone affected will be kept informed as the process progresses, and residents and employees will continue to receive appropriate support throughout.”

“While we are unable to comment further ahead of the Cabinet meeting, we want to reassure people that no outcomes have been predetermined and all relevant factors will be carefully considered.”

Grisedale Croft in Alston and Applethwaite Green in Windermere could be axed by Westmorland and Furness Council due to out-of-date building and could see the same fate as the former greengarth care home in Penrith closed and erased from the site by the Council.

The 13-bed care home was awarded a ‘good’ rating in its most recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) report in 2020.

But the council says that it is operating at a reduced capacity of residents due to ‘longstanding recruitment challenges, high agency reliance and an inability to meet modern regulatory standards’.

The council cabinet will consider plans to consult on the closure of both care homes on Tuesday with press and public excluded from the meeting.
