Council drop-in events to share views on new parking permit process for Penrith

Westmorland and Furness council are encouraging those that require on-street parking in the area to take part in its consultation.

Over 200 people that live and work in Penrith have so far shared views in the council's consultation on a new parking permit application process.

Set to launch in Spring 2024, the councils new 'parking protocol' will be formally introduced to address specific parking issues in Penrith, making the way permits are obtained a fair and consistent process for all.

To offer residents and businesses the opportunity to talk to the Westmorland and Furness Council Traffic Management Team about the newly proposed process, two public drop-in sessions have been arranged for:

Friday 9 February from 10am to 4pm at Penrith Costa Coffee – Angel Square

Tuesday 20 February from 10am to 4pm at Penrith Library.

Councillor John Murray, Chair of the Eden Locality Board said: "In areas with lots of terrace housing like Penrith, efficient on-street parking is crucial for optimising limited space and making the area an enjoyable place to live, work and thrive.

"The proposed parking protocol will formally introduce new, transparent criteria for the way permits are distributed, ensuring a reasonable number are issued to households across the area, enhancing on-street parking provisions in Penrith.

"Most residents will see no noticeable change to their day-to-day parking arrangements and can still apply for up to two permits per household dependent on access to off-street parking.

"The consultation provides an opportunity to have your say on the new protocol before it is finalised and discussed at Eden Locality Board in April 2024.

"We encourage Penrith residents and those that work in the area to take part and make a real difference to road users in your local community."
