Westmorland and Furness Council has confirmed a by-election for the Penrith South ward of Westmorland and Furness Council has been validly called to full the vacant seat on Westmorland and Furness Council following the resignation last week of former Cllr Taylor.
If the election is contested with more than one candidate, the poll will take place on Thursday 12th March 2026, between the hours of 7am and 10pm.
The last election for the Penrith South Ward on Westmorland and Furness Council was in May 2022 with a voter turnout of 28.55%.
A Notice of Election will be published by the council on Thursday 5th February allowing prospective candidates to submit nomination papers prior to the deadline of Friday 13th February.

A list of candidates will be published by the council no later than Monday 16th February.
The candidate elected for the vacant seat in the by-election will serve just over a year with the next full election for all 65 seats on Westmorland and Furness Council taking place in May 2027, from May 2027 Penrith will gain a fifth councillor with the South Ward increasing from the current two seats to three seats.
